Category B Write-off — The body shell must be crushed but salvageable parts can be used on other vehicles

Category N Write-off — Non-structural damage that can be repaired — the vehicle can return to the road

IAS — Independent Appeals Service — the appeals body for private parking charges issued by IPC members

BPA — British Parking Association — a trade body for parking operators. Members use POPLA for appeals

IPC — International Parking Community — a trade body for parking operators. Members use IAS for appeals

Mis-selling — When a financial product is sold in a misleading way — for example, failing to disclose commission or recommending an unsuitable product

DVLA — Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency — handles vehicle registration, driving licences, and vehicle tax

DVSA — Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency — responsible for MOT testing, vehicle recalls, and roadworthiness enforcement

MOT — Ministry of Transport test — the annual roadworthiness inspection required for vehicles over 3 years old

V5C — The vehicle registration certificate (logbook) — proves the registered keeper, NOT the owner

Excess Mileage Charge — A fee charged at the end of a PCP agreement if you have exceeded the agreed annual mileage limit

CONC — Consumer Credit sourcebook — the FCA's rulebook governing how firms must behave when providing consumer credit

Affordability Assessment — The checks a lender must carry out before approving credit to ensure you can afford the repayments without financial hardship

Irresponsible Lending — When a lender approves credit without properly assessing whether the borrower can afford the repayments

Part Exchange — Trading in your current vehicle as partial payment towards a new one. The dealer deducts its value from the price of the new vehicle

Treating Customers Fairly — An FCA principle requiring financial firms to put customers' interests at the centre of their business. Often abbreviated to TCF

Redress — Compensation or remedy provided to consumers who were sold financial products unfairly

GFV — Guaranteed Future Value — the minimum value the dealer guarantees for your vehicle at the end of a PCP deal. Also called the Guaranteed Minimum Future

VED — Vehicle Excise Duty — the annual road tax paid to DVLA to keep a vehicle on the road

HPI Check — A vehicle history check that reveals outstanding finance, write-off history, stolen status, and mileage discrepancies

Final Response Letter — A letter from a financial firm giving their final decision on your complaint. You then have 6 months to refer it to the FOS if unhappy

Repair or Replace — After 30 days, if a vehicle develops a fault within 6 months, the dealer must repair or replace it. If the repair fails, you can reject

Eight-Week Rule — If a lender has not resolved your complaint within 8 weeks, you can escalate it to the Financial Ombudsman Service
