How Motor Finance Mis-Selling Affected Derry City and Strabane
Dealerships such as Charles Hurst Derry City and Strabane, Donnelly Group Derry City and Strabane, Shelbourne Motors Derry City and Strabane, and JC Halliday Derry City and Strabane were involved in the sale of PCP (
Personal Contract Purchase) and HP (
Hire Purchase) finance agreements. These dealerships facilitated lending from major financial institutions including
Black Horse (Lloyds Banking Group),
MotoNovo Finance,
[Close Brothers](https://mlj.org.uk/lenders/close-brothers-motor-finance) Motor Finance,
Santander Consumer Finance, Barclays Partner Finance, and
[Alphera](https://mlj.org.uk/lenders/alphera-financial-services) Financial Services (BMW).
The widespread use of
discretionary commission arrangements by these lenders and dealerships led to significant mis-selling issues. Under this arrangement, finance companies could pay additional commissions to dealers for selling more profitable deals, often at the expense of customers.
The FCA Motor Finance Investigation
In response to these practices, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) initiated an investigation into motor finance agreements between 6 April 2007 and 1 November 2024. The findings indicated that as many as 12.1 million eligible agreements (FCA, March 2026) by mis-selling practices across the UK (FCA estimate). This represents a total value of £7.5 billion, with an average overpayment of £829 per customer (FCA estimate).
Dealerships and lenders in Derry City and Strabane may have been part of this issue, leading to potential financial loss for many residents who entered into these agreements.
